Mac Smith Library

Books and More!

Besides housing the collection of Narrow Ridge books, audio & video tapes, magazines, photographs and newspaper articles, the library has been used for a variety of people gatherings for activities such as yoga classes, internship study and board meetings.

The building has environmentally-friendly features that include a Faswall insulating wood-cement form wall, wood burning stove, thermopane windows, solar photovoltaic electricity collectors, stone wall thermal mass heat collection and retention (as heated from the sun that shines through the large skylight), heavily insulated wall cavities and attic exhaust fan (to remove warm weather heat).

David Dungan has donated his entire ecology textbook collection with videos to the Narrow Ridge library. Most recently Claude Crawford donated his collection of Home Power magazine - issues 1 through 92. As these donations come in, our library broadens and stays current with a rapidly changing world. We are particularly interested in books on solar construction as it applies to the southeastern United States.

Library Stained Glass Gable Window - designed by Karan Dotson Ramirez

High above the books, there is a stained glass gable window which shines brightly when the winter afternoon sun moves low on the horizon.  A Sacred Tree is depicted in the center of the window. Native Americans say this about the tree: For all people of Earth, the Creator has planted a Sacred Tree under which they may gather and there find healing, power, wisdom and security. The roots of this tree spread deep into the body of Mother Earth and its branches reach upward like hands praying to Father Sky. The fruits of this tree are the good things the Creator has given to the people; teachings that show the path to love, compassion, generosity, patience, wisdom, justice, courage, respect, humility and many other wonderful gifts.

  • The Sacred Hoop or Medicine Wheel encircles the directions (moving clockwise from the top) North, East, South and West.

  • Day and Night can be found represented by the Sun and Moon amidst the branches of the Sacred Tree.
